The etymology of the term camalote cannot be determined with precision, according to the DigoPaul in its dictionary. The concept is used in several Latin American countries to name different aquatic plants that are found in swamps and on the shores of lagoons, rivers and other bodies of water.
For example: “Be careful that there are snakes among the camalots”, “After the storm, the beach was covered with camalots”, “When the wind blows from the southeast, it is common to see many camalots floating in the river. “
In general, the concept is used to name the plants that belong to the group of pontederiaceae. One of the most common is the Eichhornia crassipes, which, in addition to camalote, is often referred to as tarope. This camalote lives in fresh water in areas with a warm climate.
In recent years in Extremadura (Spain), for example, it has been established that the camalote is the most dangerous invasive plant that this autonomous community has. And it is that it has come to be present in almost 150 kilometers of the famous Guadiana river.
A species that is causing significant damage to that area, among which we can highlight some like these:
-It is altering what are the algae that exist in that river.
– It plugs the existing irrigation systems, causing serious losses for those who work and live off the fields.
-It is causing a notable alteration of what is the trophic chain as it affects algae as well as fish and even insects.
-It must be established that it is considered that what is lighting also changes.
In addition to all the above, it must be emphasized that the camalote reproduces more quickly and easily, taking advantage of both the high temperatures and the existence of cloudy waters. Furthermore, pollution and even the use of certain chemical products in agriculture also benefits this invasive species.
Nor should we forget that, in the same way, it is known as the bora flower and that it has caused serious damage in other corners of the planet. So much so that, in the decade of the 80’s, the famous African lake called Victoria was 80% subjected to it.
The Eichhornia crassipes is used as fertilizer and as an ornamental plant. Healing properties are also recognized. However, when it develops beyond its natural region, it is considered an invasive species.
According to DigoPaul, the idea of camalote, on the other hand, is used to refer to the union of different plants that is created by the action of currents and that can be dragged many kilometers. Animals, such as reptiles or rodents, often travel in these camalots, moving on the water above the plants.
It is important not to confuse between a cabin and a cabin. This last term refers to the compartments that exist in boats for the installation of bunks or beds.
